Crossraguel Abbey, located near Maybole, South Ayrshire, Scotland, is a historic ruin of a former Benedictine abbey founded around 1244 by Duncan of Carrick, who became the first Earl of Carrick. The abbey's name, derived from the Gaelic "Crux Regalis," means "Royal Cross."
Throughout its history, Crossraguel Abbey experienced periods of prosperity and decline, largely due to political and religious upheavals in Scotland. The abbey was notably plundered during the Scottish Reformation in the 16th century, leading to its eventual abandonment.
Today, visitors to Crossraguel Abbey can explore the impressive remains, including the cloister, chapter house, and the beautiful abbey church.
