Smile - You're on Candid Camera!
The British version of Candid Camera began its long run on ITV in 1960 and such was the popularity of the show that over the years it was revived on a number of occasions. The original host was Bob Monkhouse, but many will remember other presenters and tricksters including David Nixon, Jonathan Routh and Peter Dulay. In later years Jeremy Beadle did a similar type of show.
This classic clip from the first season made by ABC TV (the weekend ITV contractor for the Midlands and the North of England) is one of the best practical jokes of all time. The prank will be rather lost on the next generation who will be driving only electric cars.
Sadly, Regent petrol was rebranded as Texaco in Britain in the late 1960s - that's globalisation for you. And yes, petrol really was only 4/9 a gallon! You could fill an 8 gallon tank for under £2 - what a bargain!!
The Candid Camera format was developed in the USA and it was first aired as early as 1948. Over the years all three American networks ran it in some format. However its origins went further back to a 1947 ABC radio programme called Candid Microphone.
