We show that subtle shifts in definitions, combined with a misleading use of the recently introduced GWP* metric, can distort understanding to the point where significant emitters of greenhouse gases are presented as ‘climate neutral’ and aligned to the Paris Agreement. At the heart of the matter is methane. Because methane is a short-lived but very potent climate pollutant, declining emissions reduce warming as concentrations in the atmosphere decline. This is wrongly presented as a ‘cooling’ effect that offsets the warming effect of ongoing emissions from businesses resulting in ‘climate neutrality’. Like methane itself, the ‘cooling’ effect of reductions is temporary. We discuss the recent policy implications of this very active debate.

Bio
I am an environmental economist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. I completed my PhD in the UK, in land-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) modelling and policy, specifically looking at biomass with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). I did my first postdoc at UC Davis, where my interest was sparked in the climate impact of livestock and climate metrics. I started my LLNL postdoc earlier this year, where I continue to research CDR science and policy.
