THIS MAY BE THE MOST ISOLATED FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATION IN THE ENTIRE PHILIPPINES!
Sept 5th, 1988... the day Cagayan de Tawi Tawi became "Mapun". Every year, this island municipality celebrates foundation day by coming together as a community, and showcasing what it means to be "Jama Mapun". One thing that is very traditional and deeply rooted here? Lunsay. A traditional song and dance of the Jama Mapun. The distinct parts of it include gathering in a circle, singing, and stamping on bamboo to create sound. I have heard that at some celebrations this could go on for hours… holding hands, and moving in a spiral. I had the opportunity not only to witness this... but also to watch a vibrant Filipino community come together and celebrate. Mapun Island may be in the middle of the Sulu Sea and very isolated...
But it is home to a community of Filipinos with a diverse and beautiful culture!
What a wonderful experience!
