[1] 腹切り (harakiri), from 腹 (hara, “belly”) + 切る (kiru, “to cut”).
Often called “harakiri” in the West, “seppuku” is a form of ritual suicide that originated in Japan’s ancient samurai warrior class. The act typically involved stabbing oneself in the belly with a short sword, slicing open the stomach and then turning the blade upwards to ensure a fatal wound. Some practitioners of seppuku allowed themselves to die slowly, but they usually enlisted the help of a “kaishakunin,” (介錯人) or an assistant, who would behead them with a katana as soon as they made their initial cut. The entire process was accompanied by great ceremony. Among other rituals, the doomed individual often drank sake and composed a short “death poem” before taking up the blade.

[2] "斬り捨て御免" AKA Kirisute-gomen was a right allowing samurai to strike down commoners, or those below their rank, who had insulted them, their honor or their position in any way and to leave the body where it lay without fear of indemnity or punishment. The right of such action was permitted when cases of extreme rudeness, hindrance of a samurai’s official functions, slight, slur, defamation, deliberate attack on, or conflict with a samurai arose.
