DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3 is small in size, but big on potential. This video offers tips on unlocking the potential of this content creator favorite.
DJI Mimo app
The first time you activate your Pocket 3, you’ll need to do so through the Mimo app. That’s not all the app can do, though. The app can also help you preview shots on a larger screen. You can even start and stop recording remotely.
ActiveTrack
This feature allows you to set the Pocket 3 on a still surface and track the movements of a chosen subject. Simply double-tap the subject on the touchscreen, or draw a square around them in the Mimo app. If you plan to vlog in selfie mode, swipe down from the top of the screen and choose FT selfie mode, which allows the camera to track your face when self-filming.
Wearable mode
With this mode active, you can shoot POV footage while wearing the device. Select Wearable mode in the settings, and it will disable most touchscreen functions so that you can avoid accidental interference while recording. Swipe up from the bottom of the touchscreen to exit this mode when you’re done.
PRO mode
The Osmo Pocket 3 has some impressive pro-level controls for non-auto users. Swipe left on the screen to manually adjust camera settings like exposure, white balance, color settings, tracking, sharpness, and noise reduction. If shooting in the Manual exposure mode, the Mimo app has helpful features like an overexposure alert that can be toggled on or off, with overexposed areas signaled with a diagonal striped overlay so that you can adjust your settings. It also has a histogram function for conditions like direct sunlight, when it can be hard to see the camera. Finally, the Mimo app offers a lock exposure function too. The Osmo Pocket 3 defaults to adjusting exposure automatically as you move between different lighting environments. To disable that function, press and hold on the Mimo screen until a circle with a yellow lock symbol appears. This will lock the exposure and the focus.
Cancel recording
If you want to cancel a recording in the Mimo app, you can simply hold down the recording button until a red ring circles around the trash icon. The video will be cancelled without saving to the microSD card.
Audio backup
The built-in mic audio backup mode can be very helpful in a pinch. Toggle it on in settings and the camera will save the audio recorded by the internal camera mic to a separate audio file. This can even be used with separate mics to record parallel audio on two tracks (such as for voiceover or ambiance).
There are so many other tricks the Pocket 3 offers, especially when combined with the DJI Mic 2 included in the creator combo kit, but this is all we can cover for now.
