I never realized it until I rewatched this after working on an analysis of Undertale and Deltarune’s stories, but the alternate timeline in this video (which Sans characterizes by Frisk’s lack of Determination) actually makes a LOT of sense when you consider what the stories have to say about the relationship between a game and its player.

The goal of the player has always been to be a force of change that acts through the vessel of the protagonist. Mario doesn’t save the princess unless you tell him to jump, and Sonic doesn’t defeat Eggman unless you tell him to run. If they did, they’d just be movies, and that’s why Deltarune’s world will be covered in darkness if you give up and quit after dying…

But that’s just the point here- if the Determination actually comes from YOU, the Player, for the sake of the metaphor to work, then Frisk can’t have Determination in a retelling of the story in the form of a YouTube video with no “player”, which explains why Frisk is just dead instead of reloading. The post-credit scene even had Alphys writing about the Neuroscience of Free Will on the board, making the acknowledgment of this theme a conscious effort, so I suspect I’m not just reading too far into a happy coincidence of writing, am I Mr. Montage?

I know the subtitles reflect his comedic genius, but this guy might just be a literary analysis genius too 🤔…

Flowey died too
Toriel is a terrible caregiver
Papyrus can’t build a bridge
Undyne has -7/20 vision
Mad dummy still is the same
Mettaton has the same shows but is putting a corpse on T.V and nobody knows
Muffet tries business tactics on a dead person
Mettaton EX gets outclassed by a human
Sans sees the human has no determination and is dead, but he goes along with it
Apparently everyone has -7/20 vision because nobody except sans has seen that the human is dead and asgore yeets the human at the barrier and, despite the human being 100% dead at this point, the barrier still breaks.
Everyone is free and happy
And you can’t forget sans who shoved a child’s corpse off the cliff edge.

I couldn’t wish for a better timeline.
