"The population decline is progressing rapidly. In particular, Aomori Prefecture is facing a population outflow issue."

On April 14, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications released its population estimates as of October 1, 2024. According to the estimates, Aomori Prefecture's population is 1,165,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous year. The decline rate is 1.66%, the second highest in the country after Akita Prefecture.

On the other hand, the "social decline rate," which is the number of people leaving the prefecture for employment or further education, exceeds the number of people moving into the prefecture, was 0.37%, the highest in the country.

A prefectural official said about the fact that the "social decline rate" has been the highest in the country for two consecutive years.

"There is a large excess of people moving out of the prefecture, mainly young people, so we believe it is important to continue to work on this in order to stop it."

In light of this situation, the prefecture will focus on improving the income of its residents.

"As a measure to combat population decline, we have started a joint initiative between the government, industry, and universities, including child and child-rearing support, encouraging high school and university students to settle in the prefecture, and improving income. Through these efforts, we hope to achieve results in the medium to long term."

In addition, the "natural decline rate," which is the rate at which the number of births is lower than the number of deaths, is 1.30%, a larger decrease than the previous year.
